Robert Craig Weber says
Speaking of “Coyote,” I love the video of Joni performing the tune at Gordon Lightfoot’s house. She and Bob were sitting side-by-side, and she’s obvously happy to impress the others.
As the public has since learned, the lyrics to “Coyote” recount her experience with the late playwright/actor, Sam Shepard.
The word for Joni and Sam at this time in their careers is parapatetic.
Back to the point of Jerry’s lesson, where else but at his site could we learn the intricacies of Joni’s technique?
Jerry says
Thanks Robert – I appreciate those words.
Sam Shepard clearly had quite an effect on Joni.
It was interesting to me that she chose the same tuning, using a similar rhythm and that same 002220 chord as the home chord on her very next album.
The lyrics here are much more impressionist but they’re both such great songs.

Jerry,
On these songs where you tune the low E down to C, are you using a higher than usual gauge string for it? I’ve just always wondered, because I’ve never been able to get a good sound in that tuning.
Thanks!
Jerry says
Hi Steve
I’m using .11 to .50 here and I’m lucky that this guitar and the Santa Cruz quite happily drop down to a C on the 6th string.
Some looseness is part of the sound on these low tunings, but obviously not enough to put it out of tune.
Try a .53 on the 6th string if you’re having that problem.
