Probably a silly question: I’ve gotten so comfortable travis picking with my thumb playing the bottom three strings that when I encounter a song like “I’m Easy” I have trouble adjusting to the expectation that my thumb should move up to the third string.

My inclination is to play the third string with my index finger (which is technically not travis picking, I guess). Another song like this is “In Spite of Ourselves” by John Prine.

    How much does this matter?

      Hi Mark
You would lose the sense of the ‘bouncing bass’ of Travis picking by using the index finger.
Having said that, if it sounds OK and works for you then why not.
I naturally go root note to 4 as well, but I’ve taught myself to also be able to play root to 3 because there are several artists who do that a lot.
As well as the ones you mention, Paul Simon and Townes Van Zandt do (although not exclusively).
Go with what works for you, but if you can train your thumb to be able to go root 3 as well, it’s another arrow in your quiver.
