Hi Jerry,
I am eager to learn this song, but I want to know what version of the song you based your transcription on before I purchase the lesson. I am entranced by one that I understand is just Sandy and solo guitar. It has an extended instrumental solo between the second and third verse and another one after the third verse. Are these in your lesson? Thanks in advance!
Jerry says
Hi Peter
That’s the version I’ve used for this lesson and it has all the parts you mention.
Cheers
Jerry

In the second measure, I find the thumb-over note a bit tricky. So instead I use my index finger. This leaves the high E string open, but it’s not played anyway. Is there a good reason not to do this? Maybe later I will work on the thumb-over technique, but I’m impatient to learn this song!. Meanwhile I hope I’m not committing some sin of guitar technique here!
This is a fantastic lesson by the way, I am a frugal scumbag but it was worth the money. Sandy’s ghost is haunting me in a good way. My only quibble with your videos is that your voice is a bit off-mic. Alright, I’m nit-picking, I can hear every word you say, and the guitar is the most important thing. But I can’t help my pedantic self.
Jerry says
Hi Declan
No problem with avoiding the thumb over there. It’s the more common guitaristic technique for that shape so I did it that way but your way will work fine.
Sorry about the sound. About 18 months I sorted out the sound issue, but the videos earlier than that do have that recessed sound.

Hi Jerry, I purchased this download, but the download stops and I see not how to get it. Any suggestion how I can get it with our purchasing double?
Kind Regards
Christian

Hi Christian. I’m trying to reply with some help, including an alternative link, but your email provider is rejecting my replies saying:

Do you have another email address I can use?

Technique question when if you have a moment, Jerry. This song has several single string runs: how important is it to alternate index and middle finger on the picking hand when executing these runs? (For instance, on the A major at bar 31).
I notice you are careful to alternate, but I sort of “naturally” want to use a single finger. Is this a bad habit to get into? Does it matter all that much?
Thanks for all the great lessons, including this gorgeous Sandy Denny song.

I love this song – beautiful and unutterably sad. Now I’m going to make myself seriously late for work – can’t put the guitar down :)
