I played this tune for many years, ALL WRONG, and I couldn’t work it out properly on my own. Jerry’s lesson enabled me to play this lovely work properly and what a gift it is to finally be able to do it right. Thanks Jerry for all your good work!

It would be helpful if the description included which chords would be necessary for the songs.

Jerry;
An interesting note on this song. Paul Simon wrote the music for this song in 1964 / 65 while he was living in London (The first attempt at a duo with Garfunkel didn’t sell so he was again trying for a solo career in England). The lyrics come from an old English nursery rhyme and is actually a song about a Cuckoo bird.
Now on to your comments in your lesson that the song is too high for you to sing. I too can not sing like Art Garfunkel however, Paul Simon actually recorded this song while he was in England as a solo artist on the album “The Paul Simon Songbook” which was released in 1965. The song is performed with the guitar tuned down a half step. Paul Simon requested the album deleted in 1969.
Anyway, my point is that I have learned this tune because of your wonderful lesson and to sing it, rather then capo the first fret, you tune down a half step and at least for me, it put it in the range where I can sing it. That would be a full step down from where the Garfunkel version is recorded.
You might want to check the album out (it’s available digitally) because it has “I Am a Rock”, “The Sound of Silence”, “Patterns”, “A Most Peculiar Man” and “April Come She Will” as Paul Simon solo’s. Also the album cover has a picture of Kathy Chitty on it who was the inspiration of “Kathy’s Song” and probably for a lot of his output at that time.

Hi Steven.
The Paul Simon songbook is a great album. I love hearing some of those songs that ended up (to my mind) overproduced on Sounds of Silence done with just Paul and an acoustic.
And yes, it certainly is easier to sing in Paul’s range on that song :)
